Facemasks/respirators are commonly used to protect people from acquiring respiratory infections, particularly during epidemics and pandemics. Common issues related to currently used facemask/respirators are: high cost, unavailability, varying filtration efficacy, lack of facial fit and low compliance. The main aim of this research is to design a new low cost re-usable mask "Bio-C-Cure" to enhance protection and comfort. Various fabrics will be tested for physical and filtration properties. The fabric will then be modified to make it hydrophobic, with antimicrobial properties conferred by the use of copper and silver zeolite. Finally, a new mask will be designed and laboratory tested. The ideal candidate for this project would have a science graduate, with a chemistry background. READ MORE
