Dr Holly Seale

Senior Lecturer, program lead for ‘social and behavioural research’, and ‘occupational vaccination and other at-risk groups’.

Dr Holly Seale BSc, MPH, PhD,  School of Public Health and Community Medicine, UNSW, Sydney.

Dr Seale is an infectious disease social researcher whose work focuses on exploring the individual, societal and organisational factors that influence compliance with infection prevention strategies and with formulating and developing approaches/interventions to improve uptake.  Her research includes qualitative and quantitative research approaches and consumers such as hospital/community healthcare workers, special at-risk groups (people with underlying illness, migrants/refugees), students and the general public.

One of her key areas of research is focused on seasonal and pandemic influenza. She has done numerous studies focused on improving the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccination amongst a range of at-risk populations. She is one of few Australian researchers to focus on occupational influenza vaccination and have generated a large number of publications focused on hospital healthcare workers, general practitioner and childcare educators. She was the first Australian researcher to develop a decision aid focused on hospital healthcare workers. She has been invited to develop information booklets aimed at assisting hospital immunisation coordinators to promote influenza vaccination to their staff. Her research has also been used to help guide the development of the NSW Ministry of Health influenza vaccine campaign. She is routinely invited to present to hospital immunisation coordinators at statewide annual meetings. At these meetings, she aims to familiarise the coordinators with the latest influenza research and to highlight new strategies that can be used to promote awareness and uptake.

More recently, she has started to explore the delivery of immunisation in the hospital setting and to examine the policy/practices around recommending and/or vaccinating children/adolescents and adults with conditions predisposing to severe influenza and other vaccine preventable diseases. She recently completed a study that found that only 40% of at-risk children/adolescents had been vaccinated against seasonal influenza. This level of uptake is well below the Healthy People 2020 target of 80%. Holly is already developing new strategies to try and promote uptake in our hospital setting.

She has published more than 105 peer-reviewed publications including papers focused on the epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases, on the delivery and evaluation of national immunisation programs, on the social factors impacting on coverage and the impact of interventions aimed at improving acceptance. Based on her research she has been invited to speak at events ranging from the NSW Ministry of Health ‘Bug Breakfasts’ (statewide) to National/International conferences.
